Groove Juice Swing: Swing Dancing in Rochester, NY

Rebecca Berman

Rebecca Berman

When Rebecca first moved to Rochester, she dined at a popular local barbecue joint, listened to some fantastic live jazz and blues, and watched in awe as the people at the next table hit the dance floor and danced like nothing she'd seen before. She knew she needed to learn that dance. It wasn't until college that she took her first partnered dance class and has been dancing Lindy Hop ever since.

Rebecca loves a great dance with laughs and playful movement, a partnered connection that comes from the heart, and just fooling around on the dance floor because the music said to. In classes she strives to empower followers while fostering creativity, expression, and the improvisational link between Lindy Hop and jazz.

Rebecca is a choreographer, instructor, and founding member of the  Flower City Follies, and is happy to showcase vintage jazz dance in many community events as part of this all-ladies troupe. She enjoys traveling to dance events, workshops, and competitions around the US, Canada, and abroad to meet and share the love of the dance with other world-travelers and Lindy Hop enthusiasts. Recently, she has placed at competitions at Lindy Focus (Asheville, NC), the Chorus Girl Competition at the Ultimate Lindy Hop Championships as part of the Flower City Follies (New Orleans), and Canadian events Montreal Swing Riot, O-Town Showdown, & Swing-A-Dance with her partner Doriel Pryntz-Nadworny. She teaches Cardio Charleston regularly in Rochester and had the pleasure of sharing it at Stompology and Swing Out New Hampshire. You can also catch her DJing swinging tunes whenever possible.

Rebecca works with Groove Juice as publicist and communications specialist. She enjoys the whole process of event coordination, from creating a unique vision to seeing the plans come to life.

Rebecca is a founding member of University of Rochester's Swing Dance Club where she taught weekly lessons to the student members 2007-2010. She is currently a graduate student at the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester and regularly performs violin with UR's Chamber Orchestra and her string quartet, Quartessential.
